* Rahdrey hasn't been in to work for the last couple of weeks. After recovery Captain Danes gave the man a few days off, and the mage took them. He's not a workaholic, he hates his job, he was happy to have some free time. His only lament was that it wasn't long enough to make a trip home. Now he's back to the hell that is the Frost Watch, and his first stop of the evening is at Calanthar's door. He knocks briskly, hoping the man is st

<Rahdrey> hoping the man is still in.

<Calanthar> *Hoping* that Calanthar is still in? Calanthar has been having a pleasant few days without Rahdrey - he's *hoping* that the knock *isn't* the Ourani sergeant. "Come on in, then, if you have to..." The Captain will be staring down at some papers on his desk when the door opens, murmuring "I'm hoping to get home shortly, so this had better be..." Oh. Damn. "Orson. Haven't seen you in a while - your Lieutenant's been missing you, I'

<Calanthar> your Lieutenant's been missing you, I'm sure... What's this about?"

<Kidius> has mixed thoughts about joining the watch they did kill her brother, but she's grown weary of cooking a job she used to do back home and it's still as boring as ever. Maybe a job at the Watch will prove more rewarding and a little more exciting.

* Rahdrey isn't any happier to be back then Calanthar is to see him. He moves into the office and takes a seat, the door left open so the cigarette smoke can clear out. The mage doesn't mind smoke, but he'd rather not smell like a cigarette for the rest of the night. "We need to talk about Corporal Versai, captain."

* Roz (eichica@dm-22771.dhcp.mrqt.mi.charter.com) has joined #Sinari_Town

<Calanthar> "Versai? Good soldier, that one..." Calanthar will rise momentarily, moving to a filing cabinet. After a few moments of searching, a folder titled 'Versai, Lanvadi' is withdrawn, and he'll drop back down, opening it up and scanning the pages. "Native of Sinari - been a soldier since 16, only one disciplinary note - showed up late for patrols one day a few weeks ago." The usual basics, but as Calanthar reads on, something will catch his atten

<Calanthar> reads on, something will catch his attention - an eyebrow arches, and he'll look over the edge of the folder at Rahdrey. "Only one other instance of absence." The folder is closed and set down on the table, but after a moment's thought, the Captain will pick it up and put it back in the cabinet instead. "That's about it."

* Kidius makes her way towards the building with the open door, hoping she's found the right place. She stops just outside the door and peers inside at the two men.

<Rahdrey> "Good soldier? She doesn't follow orders!" He protests, leaning forward in his chair. He still has some signs of healing scarring around his left eye, the scabbing mostly gone but the skin is still red with lines from the cuts. He doesn't seem to notice Kidius standing off to the side in the open office door, or he's ignoring her. "I was assaulted and she did nothing. She disobeyed a direct order, and stood by while I was attacke

<Rahdrey> while I was attacked."

<Calanthar> Calanthar just stares at Rahdrey, half wondering if the sergeant expects a few scars to gross him out. He's half tempted to exhale cigarette smoke into the man's eyes, but... Let's not be uncivil. "You'll have to understand that I'm not going to jump to crucify Corporal Versai so quickly, sergeant... She's been a soldier for 8 years, with the only thing against her being one day where she was an hour or two late, and who has only asked for the

<Calanthar> two late, and who has only asked for the sum total of one month's vacation over her entire career, for family purposes." He'll lean back in his chair for a moment, playing with a cigarette, before musing "The Ourani military prides itself on a strict chain of command - it is unfathomable for the soldier to consider disobeying an order. For this reason, the question of an officer's leadership skills is never called into question. There are

<Calanthar> "There are some, however, who understand that the loyalty of men cannot be demanded and expected like the loyalty of a hound. That a leader who is... Lacking may not be able to command the obedience of his subordinates. That fear of the whip only goes so far in the face of higher things. I'm sure it would be *outrageous* to you to hear me talk about that as though a subordinate's misbehaviour could be your fault. Honestly though, what do you *expec

<Calanthar> fault. Honestly though, what do you *expect* me to do? Drag her out in the street and shoot her?"

* Kidius listens to their conversation waiting until now to speak I hope I am not interrupting anything, but I was wondering if this was the recruiting office for the Watch and if not, could you point the way?

* Rahdrey stares at him in shock for a moment. The man is taking advantage of the very thing that he's criticizing. He knows that Orson can only demand so much of the higher-ranking captain, and the insult to his ability to command are not unnoted. "Sir, I asked for her assistance in arresting a person. She refused. I told her it was an order and again she refused. I had planned to report the insubordination and nothing more. My prob

<Rahdrey> nothing more. My problem is when two men -assaulted- me and she stood by and laughed. Regardless of whether she agreed or not, watching a person get beaten into unconsciousness strikes me as poor conduct, regardless of the strictness of-" He jumps when the new arrival speaks, a bit startled at the unexpected voice of Kidius. He looks over at her, a faint scowl on his face.

<Calanthar> "And *my* problem is with the assertion that, if there was a genuine reason for arresting this man..." He had intended to take advantage of Rahdrey's pause, but the new figure in the doorway isn't even Frost Watch, much less a high-enough ranking soldier to warrant any knowledge of this dispute. "I handle most people who are seeking work with the Watch. What's your name?" He won't rise immediately, looking the woman over. "Are you a citize

<Calanthar> looking the woman over. "Are you a citizen of Sinari?"

<Kidius> "Yes I am." Kidius shows Calanthar her tattoo.

* Rahdrey wants to protest Calanthar, but he'll wait until the business with this new person is over. He's wearing the heavy black leather coat of an Ourani soldier, but he must be one of the people working with the Frost Watch if his argument is any indication.

<Calanthar> "And what's your name?" For the potential recruit's sake, he's trying to remain calm, repeating the question without any of the usual sarcasm. "There's a few requirements, of course - you'll have to stop by the infirmary and have them conduct a few tests of your health to send to us, you'll have to meet our basic physical requirements, and then wait while we check your background. Why are you looking for work with the Frost Watch?" It's a que

<Calanthar> work with the Frost Watch?" It's a question everyone gets asked, but after hearing how bitterly officers argue, shouldn't she have turned around and just left?

* Ian (phalanx@dm-27978.hsd1.tx.comcast.net) has joined #Sinari_Town

* Kidius It's not like she hasen't recieved dirty looks before, she completely ignores Rahdrey. As for arguing that's nothing compared to a boat load of pirates, who on more than one occasion have been at each others throats with knives and swords. "Well, I know a little sword fighting and I figured in these rather bleak times you could use another pair of hands. I'm also sure a guards salery is a little better than anything else in t

<Kidius> than anything else in town I could get."

* Rahdrey makes no move to leave the office. He plans to finish the argument she interupted. Anyone that wants to join the Watch must be mad, or completely broke. She only confirms his theory when she states her reasoning.

<Calanthar> Hah. With current salary cuts? She wishes. "Very well - *but*, you still haven't given me a name. Until I get that, we can't do much for you." There's an attempt at a genial smile - it will likely just seem out of place, given the fact that he was just in a heated debate with the black-clad figure. "The infirmary has the necessary forms, and we pay for it, so just tell them it's for the Frost Watch."

<Kidius> Oh, my name is Kidius Vile. I'll just head on over to the infirmary then. Kidius backs out of the doorway.

* Eva` is now known as Lanva`

* Calanthar will nod slowly, eyebrow arching at the hasty retreat. "You've no questions? Once you've gotten the physical from the infirmary, you can check back here with one of the sergeants on duty in two days. Hope it all works out for you, ma'am - we'll be glad to have the help."

* Rahdrey snorts, a derisive sound. Happy? Maybe. Another young woman in the Watch that will likely cry and complain and fail to follow orders. He does nothing more than sit and watch her in silence, arms crossed over his chest.

* Kidius stops a moment and thinks Hmmm, I don't suppose we are allowed to use our own weapons are we?

<Calanthar> "If you have a weapon, yes... Current restrictions on bearing them still apply, of course - this doesn't give you a liscence to pull out your sword and begin terrorizing the populace, but that's not usually a problem..." The key word here, children, is *usually*. Memories of a recent soldier's... Antics in relation to a bard spring to mind, along with another new recruit's attempted homicide of Mrs. Cayla Galen, but those were kept quiet. Well...

<Calanthar> Galen, but those were kept quiet. Well... Fairly quiet.

<Kidius> "Alright then, well thank you for your time." Kidius walks off to find the infirmary.

* Rahdrey watches the girl leave, then turns his gaze back to the captain. "I don't think I need to justify why I was arresting the man. I promise you it did not warrant being attacked. If you're content having your soldiers taunt another while he's being held down and beaten.. I guess I should have done nothing when that yeti attacked." his tone is cold and venemous.

<Calanthar> "If it had come to it, I would rather you have fled - yeti are unpredictable, savage creatures. It would, however, be a stretch to compare the two events. The Ourani style of arrest seems, to many, to be merely a petty revenge on people who say bad things about them. To deny that would be humourous, if only because I'm currently using all those scare-tactic arrest reports as a footstool. If you were attacked, unprovoked, and Corporal Versai did *n

<Calanthar> unprovoked, and Corporal Versai did *nothing* to help you, or if this was a genuine violation of the law that she failed to persecute, it will be handled. If it was a typical case of underestimating someone in a barroom brawl while you were off duty, however, it's another matter. If there was no violation of the law that warranted arrest, it's still another. Until I know more, I'm not going to go out and hang anyone."

* Rahdrey clenches his teeth, anger building. The man just assumes that he went out and picked this fight. "I was having lunch. A man came in and started throwing accusations at me, threatening me. This was after another man tried to provoke me into a fight and I ignored him. Captain, I'm not b-.. I'm not ignorant of the state of things. The arrest was not made lightly and I was within my right." He catches himself before he gets o

<Rahdrey> himself before he gets off the subject. "As I said, she refused to aid me and I planned to do little more than report it. You may not like me, but I'm not a damned liar. She -did- stand by and taunt me while I was being assaulted. People know that I'm a mage, I can't hide that. If I can't rely on a member of the Watch, the self-proclaimed civil DEFENSE, to help me, I'll find an escort from the Ourani force."

* Calanthar will pull out a piece of paper, scrawl a summary of Rahdrey's complaint on it, and slide to him, half-tossing a pen down in front of him. "Sign it then, and consider it reported. If that's *all* you came to do, then do it. But you know what I think? You don't care, of course, but as long as you're going to be in here trying to tell me that all of *my* soldiers are filth, I'm going to say it - you didn't come in here to do 'little more than r

<Calanthar> didn't come in here to do 'little more than report it'. You're hurting, and your pride's hurting, and you can't stand it. I've already told you that if there's a clear violation, it will dealt with as per the proper protocol. You want to arrest the pair that attacked you? Be my guest - I'll be right there with you in the interrogation room. When you come in here and presume to tell me how *my* men and women are shite, you won't find me all over

<Calanthar> "When you come in here and presume to tell me how *my* men and women are shite, you won't find me all over the place kissing ass like that sorry lieutenant of yours. Some of us give a damn about our soldiers. *I* would trust any of these people with my life, and I've barely known them longer than you have." Only by gritting his teeth and clenching the underside of his desk is the man able to keep his tone even and his posture steady. "You want a

<Calanthar> even and his posture steady. "You want an Ourani escort, get an Ourani escort. You won't be hurting *my* feelings."

<Rahdrey> "Pride?! What the hell does that have to do with it? She admitted herself when I saw her the other day that I could have been killed. My complaint is that she did nothing! I wouldn't trust her with my life because she didn't lift a finger to save it." He's just as angry. Of course, they're both thrust into a situation that can only breed dischord. "You know what? Forget it. Just fucking forget it." He stands and storms out, lea

<Rahdrey> and storms out, leaving the paper unsigned.

<Calanthar> Woe be unto the poor soul that comes into Devregon's office next. The paper is swept to the side but not discarded - perhaps the only sign of levelheadedness left. But who can say? The door is thrown closed, and people already know to avoid the Captain's office after Rahdrey stops by. Well... Most people do. Anyone brave or stupid enough to try to see him right now stands a fairly good chance of having a vital organ removed by hand.

<Calanthar> vital organ removed by hand.
